Understanding Investment Strategies Under SIF: Equity, Debt, and Hybrid

Why "Investment Strategy" Is the Right Word, Not "Scheme"

Under the SIF framework, what would normally be called a "scheme" in mutual fund parlance is officially termed an "Investment Strategy." Each strategy is a distinct product with its own mandate, risk profile, and disclosure document. SEBI has approved a defined list of permitted strategies across three broad buckets, and each AMC running a SIF may launch only one strategy per approved category โ€” keeping the lineup focused rather than duplicative.

The Three Broad Strategy Buckets

Category

Examples

Typical Focus

Equity-oriented

Long-Short Equity, Sector Rotation

Growth through direct equity exposure, with the added ability to take bearish positions

Debt-oriented

Debt-focused strategies within issuer/sector limits

Fixed income exposure within SEBI's concentration caps

Hybrid

Active Asset Allocator, Hybrid Long-Short Fund

Dynamic mix of equity and debt depending on market conditions

Equity-Oriented Strategies

Equity-oriented SIF strategies are built for growth-seeking investors, but with techniques unavailable to regular equity mutual funds:

  • Long-short equity โ€” taking both bullish and bearish positions rather than being long-only.

  • Sector rotation โ€” shifting exposure based on where the manager sees relative opportunity.

These strategies tend to carry meaningfully higher volatility than a standard diversified equity fund, precisely because of the added flexibility to bet against segments of the market as well as for them.

Debt-Oriented and Hybrid Strategies

Debt-oriented strategies focus on fixed income but still operate within SEBI's prescribed concentration limits (see Article 1's table for exact figures). Hybrid strategies, such as an Active Asset Allocator or Hybrid Long-Short Fund, blend equity and debt exposure and can dynamically shift the mix โ€” latitude a traditional balanced or hybrid mutual fund typically doesn't have.

Matching the Strategy to Your Goals

  • Seeking capital preservation with modest yield enhancement โ†’ look at debt-oriented strategies.

  • Comfortable with higher swings in value for potentially higher returns โ†’ explore equity long-short or hybrid options.

"SIF" is a category, not a single product โ€” the strategy you choose within it matters enormously. Understanding it properly requires reading the strategy's specific disclosure document, covered next.
